Sometimes, using a good password might not be enough to protect our account against external invasions. It is recommended to use a two-factor authenticated environment in our most important accounts such as e-mail. However, if we’re really worried about our security, we can use USB Security Keys.

What’s a USB Security Key?

As its name indicates, it’s a traditional USB. It’s been modified not to store data but to serve as two-factor authenticated environment to access to our account.

Can we use any promotional USB?

We might not; we will need a specific custom USB stick allowing us to store the token that identifies us as the owner of the account. A specific software, able to communicate with services such as Google, is used for that aim.

How can I configure a USB Security Key?

Every online-service has its own protocol to configure its authentication in two steps and if we want to configurate one of these custom USB, Google is one of the most popular services. Therefore, we will use it as example and we will follow the steps above:

  1. We will click My Account.
  2. We will click into Sign-in & Security Settings and then into Security Checkup. We must introduce our password and then click on Add Security Key
  3. Click on Register and connect the USB when we are asked to do so. If the key has a button (many do) we must click it during the process.
  4. Once the process is ended, our new Security Key will be ready. From now on, every time we want to log-in, apart from introducing our password, we will have to introduce the USB key and click the button again (if it has it) to complete the authentication process.

In this way, we can add a security layer to our account. That can be very important if we work with several computers, we travel a lot or we own a Chromebook, where Google password allows the access to all data we store in our computer.

In Customdrives® we have this kind of key so, if you want to, you can ask for a budget without commitment, we will be glad to attend you!

Nowadays, given the decline of CDs and DVDs, one of the options we use the most to hard a computer, is to create a USB to install any operating system distributed by image files.

Image 01

If you want Windows 10, use its tool

Image 02

If you want to install Windows 10 through a personalized USB flash on a computer, you just have to download Microsoft’s tool to install the new operating system. Remember to keep everything inside it in another location because you will lose all files during the process.

After downloading the tool we recommend you to execute the program as Administrator and after that, we will have two options. The second one tells us to create an installation media for another PC.

Connect the promotional USB you want to use to any available USB port and then you can choose which Windows 10 version you want. If you have problems, 32 Bits version is for a PC whose RAM Memory is lower than 4GB, and 64Bits memory is for computers whose RAM memory is 4GB or higher.

Next, you will see the possibility to select USB flash drive and you may choose among a list of drives which one must be used to install Windows 10 in a custom USB. If you had any problem because it is not recognized, return to the previous step and choose a ISO file.

If the custom USB stick was recognized, you just wait the process to be ended and if not, when the ISO file is downloaded, keep reading the next section.

Other operating systems, use Rufus

Image 03

Rufus is a tool that may allow us to create a booteable USB flash drive easily: thanks to it we will create everything to allow our PC, instead of starting the hard drive using the installed system, does it from the software we choose to insert in our USB.

We just must download the app from its official website and we can choose two options: installing version and portable version that doesn’t need to be installed. When opening Rufus we will be asked about the online updates and if we allow it to search them.

Although you didn’t introduce the personalized USB memory stick key in an available port of your PC before running the application, if you do so once it is open, it will be automatically recognized and it will be available for its use. In case it does not happen, you should choose any other USB port, try it with another USB memory or even, installing the operating system on a memory card.

When everything is ready you will have to choose which is your memory USB from the list of drives we see at the top of Rufus. Be sure this is the memory you want to use to create a bootable USB stick on Linux or other Operating Systems, because if any other was connected and you chose it by mistake you would lose all your data.

Unless you want to personalize other options (something only recomendable if you know what you’re doing), you shold click on New tag. There, you can specify a name for the USB, which will be shown once you connect it to another computer to facilitate its recognition.

When the formating options screen appear, first option must be unchecked and the others (3) checked. After, you just have to locate the file containing the operating system you want to use to create a boot disk.

For that end, an option to create a boot disk will apear on the menu, click on the right square containing a CD and a drive. There you will have to choose the ISO image file or another supported format.

When the process is finished the USB memory stick will be ready and it may be used to repair other computers or format the PC without a CD.

It’s the newest standard: the USB type C will be globally known as the connector USB-C and it takes part to the specification USB 3.0 and ended in August 2014 and was approved the 27th February 2015.

Of course, the question is how will affect this connector to our (technologic) lives and, of course, to our economy. This standard has many advantages Aimed at facilitating everything, making things faster and better.

Connect your cables with your eyes closed

The USB type C is different to the current USB cables or Micro-USB. Connector’s size is similar but its shape is different: it is reversible.

USB C - 01

There won’t be just one way to connect these cables to USB-C ports, something really useful. The idea is, also, to transmit different types of signals: data, music, video and energy.

Faster, higher, stronger

Basically: it is a USB made for loads of 100W (20V and 5A), which is more than enough to charge your computer but also to charge, at the same times, some phones. The power flow can be “negotiated” so power supply can be changed anytime and there’s no need to change the cable direction, what it means, a phone could charge a tablet or viceversa.

USB C - 02

Data rate is also interesting: 10Gbps, twice the speed of the current USB 3.0.

Is USB-C our future connector?

Enterprises such as SanDisk, LaCie or Apple already use this connector and if you ask for it, here in Customdrives® it is also made because we think USB-C is our future.

USB C - 03

First of all, we will have a transitional period where everything will have to be adapted, a small price to pay to improve our life quality, don’t you think?

You might have experienced it sometimes: you insert the USB memory device in the computer and you’re told it is not recognized. Well, there are many possible causes for that, some of them are more serious than others, but most of the cases can be solved. At Customdrives® we will try to help you so if it happens, you can fix it as soon as possible.

All right, if the computer does not recognize the promotional USB, the first thing we should do is restart the computer. Most of the problems are solved this way and not recognizing the personalized USB drive is not an exception. If it doesn’t work, we can disconnect the computer from its power source for about 15 minutes after switching it off. It can seem some kind of stupid idea, yes, but for some reason, it may work, so our advice is to try this. Another option could be connecting the custom USB to another USB port, but it barely works (unless it’s a port with troubles).

Device Manager - Picture 1

Updating the USB driver

If none of those works, we should go a step further to see if the problem can be solved. So we will open the Device Manager. As you can see on the image, we should choose “Universal Serial Bus controllers”. When you right click into the USB you want, you choose the option Update Driver Software… to allow Windows 10 to update our USB driver.

Update Driver Software - Picture 2

If there the custom USB pen we want does not appear, we should go to Device Manager and right click into the first “Generic USB Hub” we find and choose the option “Update Sdriver Software”. We should choose “”Locate driver software (recommended)” and we will click on the option that allows us to choose the model Generic USB.

If by any chance nothing of this works, we will have to install the USB drivers again. But first, it is recommended to create a restore point or a security copy (just in case). After, we just have to go to “Generic USB Hub” right click on it and click on Uninstall. Once it is made, we will restart the computer so they get automatically installed. If it does not happen, we will go to the restore point we created not to have troubles.

If none of this works, we recommend you to go to another PC and try the USB, because it might be the custom USB stick the problematic and not the computer.

If one day, while you’re walking on the street, you find a USB embedded in a wall, be happy, because you are in front of a “Dread Drops”: one of the thousands of USB memories hidden around the world created to share information without Internet control.

This way is inspired by the system used by spies to exchange information on a secret place, without the need to meet.

But this current “Dead Drops” is more recent: in 2010, the German Aram Bartholl invented a formula to create an anonymous P2P network to allow the exchange of information and files without the need to connect to the Internet. He hid 5 pendrives around New York City. Look how he did it!

Two years later, in 2012, there were already 800 “Dead Drops” embedded in wals around the world (from Senegal to Tasmania including China, Japan, Kazakhstan or Iceland). Nowadays, there are thousands of “Dead Drops “ around the world.

What’s “Dead Drops” all about?

Nothing can be easier than creating a “Dead Drops”: a hole on a wall is made, the custom USB is embedded exposing the connector, it is sealed with cement and that’s it! Everybody can be connected!

It is said the personalized USB drive must be empty, only must have a file to explain what is “Dead Drops” and its aim. And it must be always in a place that is accessible to everybody, absolutely outwards and public.

Once it is made, the place where it is placed the memory it must be told to the website deaddrops.com so users can find it.

From that moment, anyone can connect his/her computer to the promotional USB and exchange as many files and information as s/he wants (music, pictures, films…).

No digital footprint

No digital footprint

These files, as they are not shared by the Internet, don’t leave any digital finger print, which is a change in a world increasingly worried by the technologic invasion and the lack of privacy of citizens and where finding other ways to share files outside the Internet could be the key for the freedom of information.

“We need to raise again the freedom and the circulation of information” – Aram Bartholl, project initiator.

Also, many are using this system to share downloads, as Internet is not used, the Download Law is not violated.

But, be careful: some “Dead Drops” with malicious code or misleading information have been found. That precisely happened in 2015, where an investigation carried out by the German newspaper Express revealed that one of the custom USB pen embedded in a wall in Kölln (Germany) included instructions about how to manufacture a bomb. The PDF at issue also included chemical formulas to manufacture synthetic drugs such as amphetamines.

Map of these USB memories

Here

Nowadays, there are thousands of external memories around the world. More specifically, while writing this e-mail, its website counts 1,649 “Dead Drops” around the world, storing 12,101GB (more than 12TB).

Mapa mundial

The UK is not an exception and this tendency is also arriving to our country. In fact, if you want to know where your nearest “Dead Drops” is found, the official website offers a map were you can consult cities where they are found. Cities such as London or Brighton are places where these pendrives can be found.

Will you be the next person to place a “Dead Drops” in your city? Tell us!

A smartwatch is an intelligent watch that has many features similar to those found on a mobile phone but that can be comfortably worn on your wrist, like a watch. Nowadays we are all entirely familiar with smartphones, but smartwatches have arrived to offer us some extra basic functions such as giving the time, doing sums, measuring body temperature, timing (stopwatch), etc. Also, in addition to this, they can interact directly with your mobile phone, with just a glance on its touchscreen.

So, if we add the features of the most modern watches with the basic functions of mobile phones, the result is a smartwatch with camera, compass, thermometer, GPS, speakers, accelerometer, diary, microphone, SD memory card, calls, messages, etc.

It’s easy to think that by having a smartphone, there’s little to be gained by adding this kind of device. But the truth is, it’s much easier to interact with your mobile phone through a smartwatch, because we won’t need two hands to search for information, check for missed calls, return calls, send messages, or read and answer e-mails, etc. All of this is very interesting if, for instance, you are in a work meeting, since checking your smartwatch is not as intrusive as taking out your mobile phone and interacting with it constantly throughout the meeting. But let’s look at its advantages in more detail:

  • Notifications: if we receive a new e-mail, the watch will vibrate to let us know. If anyone’s calling us, we can silence the call, reject it or accept it on our smartwatch. This can be very useful if we are in a meeting or any other circumstance where it’s not possible to look at the phone’s screen. A mere glance at our watch will let us know whether it’s a message or an important call.
  • Simplicity and connection: there are many things we can do more easily with the watch. We’ll be connected to the mobile phone at all times.
  • Camera: the watch does not take pictures by itself, but it can control the phone’s camera and show what can be seen on the device. Great for group pictures.
  • Find your phone: smartwatches can be used as a remote control for the mobile. There are applications that can help us find out where our mobile phone is. Touching the watch’s screen will be enough for the phone to start making noises wherever it is.
  • Battery: with an intensive use, receiving several notifications per hour, the smartwatch’s battery will last about three days, which is a great deal longer than the standard mobile phone or computer.
  • Promising future: despite it being a relatively recent device, it has great potential for growth, for developers or companies willing to explore its possibilities. The reality is that the number of apps available to improve its user experience is growing constantly.

Obviously, smartwatches have some limitations, in particular with regards to their size. However, smartwatches were conceived to be a complement for the mobile phone. They are a second screen for our phone, and a more discreet way to check it in certain situations. In any case, they can also be used independently, as there are apps and widgets that can be added to them.

For all these reasons they can be a great choice for those employees that are constantly on the move, such as executives that have frequent meetings or who stay away from the company’s premises for long periods of time. If you are considering providing your employees with a smartwatch, you must know that in the same way as other devices, they can be customised with your company’s corporate image, for instance, with your logo and the company’s colours. This way, all your employees will carry the same smartwatch, becoming ambassadors for your brand while out of your premises.

At Custom Drives we are experts in the creation of all sorts of wearables with the best price-quality ratio. Over 2000 international clients endorse our work. We can handle small orders and also large orders for multinational companies.

smart watches are one of the most remakarble electronic trendsWe have just started this new year and we are waiting impatiently to know what will bring the electronics and technology in the upcoming months.

Some of the electronic trends we are presenting here in this post are not new. They have been developed since past years and even have a great success right now. However it is expected that 2016 will be a great year to exploit popularity and use of some specific technologies and products.

So, here are the six trends that are going to exploit this 2016:

1. Virtual reality

Facebook recently bought Oculus Rift, a company that developes virtual 3D glasses. They are not the only ones interested on a technology that makes playing videogames much more real. But not just videogames are going to be more realistic. Virtual reality pretends to be something more and to be a very important actor in the entertainment industry, including movies or live streaming shows (something that happens to be really exciting).

2. Wearables

One of the electronic trends that it is expected to become very popular is the wearables development. Smart watches, intelligent clothes and bracelets with electronic chips that measure our constants, effort and are connected to the Internet so the data collected can be shared, read and being used by other apps on the cloud or our smartphones, tablets or other connected objects. These devices will be really important for fields such as healthcare or sports, helping people and professionals. It is expected that this objects will be also very helpful when trying to understand emotional processes while people watch movies or goes shopping. This information could be extraordinarily important for marketers, for example.

3. Battery chargers

Nowadays, one of our big problems (talking about connectivity and electronics) is the limitation of the batteries capacity in our devices. custom USB power banks and USB gadgets, are the most common way to bring energy to your phone or tablet. Though, to make charging easier and not to be necessarily aware of the lack of battery of our device, some people have started to design intelligent systems that automatically recharge smartphones or tablets, even wirelessly. Bluetooth is one of the technologies tested for this purpose.

4. 3D printing

The revolutionary 3D printing is going to be even more revolutionary in this 2016. New materials including metals, carbon fiber, pane or even biological compounds are going to be essential for fields such as medicine, engineering and many other more. It is now possible to print skin and some organs tissues, opening a door to really important advances on medicine, for example.

5. Security

Protecting websites and online platforms from hackers and other attacks or failures is one the main challenges for security architectures developers. E-commerce and payments on the Internet are gaining more and more presence in our daily life, so it is necessary to take actions against online fraud and online criminals, but also it is necessary to strengthen platforms due to provide safe environments for shopping or managing our money in online banking.

6. Drones

These flying machines with cameras are becoming incredibly popular not only for entertainment but also for professional uses. Shooting movie clips from the air in an easy way results incredible images with a reduced cost of production. Furthermore, drones are not only used to shoot images. Drones can also transport objects, so they are expected to be an alternative of transport when designing logistic strategies for companies, like Amazon has starting to do.

So, now that you know what lies ahead in the coming months. What are the electronic trends that makes you feel most excited about?

Promotional campaigns to gain visibility for your company or brand can be designed in many ways. One of the best strategies to be on top of mind of your potential customers and also to increase loyalty among your business partners, employees and clients, is to give promotional presents. But this tactic is not new. Promotional gifts are well-known for marketers due to the good reception they have and also the good results obtained.

Lately, custom pen drives as gifts have become very popular among companies when launching these promotional campaigns. USB drives are pretty useful gadgets that ease customers to access their data almost anywhere without needing Internet coverage. Moreover, they may have attractive custom case designs and corporative colours that will help people to remember better the company’s name or their image values. These devices are used regularly, so the opportunity to see the logo or the image of a brand is bigger and maximizes positive effects on people’s perception and memory. That means that if customers hesitate among a company and their competitors, it is more likely to prefer the company they are more familiar to.

So, how to succeed and ensure good results on your custom pen drives campaign? Here are some useful advices:

Use a custom shape for your personalized USB drives

Do not settle only with printing your logo on the case. If it is possible, make an original design based on your company image, values and goals. This helps to spread the image and the message from the company. Furthermore, if the design is attractive enough, people would like to show it to others, so your campaign can reach more people than just the owners of the USB drives.

Print your logo or slogan and contact info

This way, people can identify brands, campaigns, who have made them and their location. It is very important to make an original design, but it is no use for marketing if customers do not link what they see and hat they touch with a name or a specific message. Print this info so as to be clearly visible and identifiable. Remember your first goal is to gain visibility, then improve your business opportunities.

Select a larger storage for your custom USB drives

This helps to cause a better impression among your clients. Also, if their storage capacity is small, that may limit the use of this drives. However, if this storage is large enough and also has a fast transfer speed, people will use more often. Less than 8GB it is not recommended, above that, you can choose whatever storage capacity you want.

Preload data on your custom pen drives

Do not just give an USB memory, but also upload software, media or relevant data for the users. There are many portable applications perfect for USB drives that can be run on computers or other devices without needing to install them previously. Here are some examples: Anti Malware, Browsers, Instant Messaging apps, multimedia players, cloud storage apps, etc.

Pay attention to the materials used

There are different materials that can be used to make custom pen drives and different techniques in modeling and printing. The best way to start to customize your own series of custom pen drives is to start designing your idea and to pass it to a professional designer or indutrial engineer that will adapt and improve that design to make your idea real.

The Universal Serial Bus, best known as USB, is going to be 20 years old on next January. It seems it has been yesterday when we started to use this technology as a way to share data from different devices easier than ever. But, how this technology was born? What are their precedents? Let’s learn a bit more about this great of the late 20th century.

Previous technologies before USB

One of the great problems of people since ancient times has been the need to store their data and also sharing it with others. Even the possibility to modify texts, images, audio or video in an easy way wasn’t real till the digital era. Nowadays USB is the main standard everybody uses, but there were (and still there are some of them) other ways of recording and storing data before USB. Here is a sample of some of them:

Storage supports on paper

Punchcards and perforated tapes were the first memory supports for computing. This cards where invented on the 18th century, but not implemented for computing since the 20th century, in the decade of the 50-60. They consisted on cards or tapes with holes in their surface according to a binary code.

Magnetic storage supports

Magnetic tapes, hard drives and magnetic disks were also very popular until the beginning of the 2000s.

Optical storage supports

Optical disks were invented on the late 50’s decade. Since then, these devices based on digital technology have become so popular till nowadays. CD, DVD and Blu-Ray are still used to record audio, images and video on them thanks to its large storage space.

Solid state unities

These ones are based on memories that are not volatile, such as flash memories. This unities are present on modern hard drives or USB drives.

The arrival of USB technology

This is a new technology invented on 1996 by Ajay Bhatt, employee of Intel. This was born because some of the most important computing enterprises were looking for a standard that would connect different devices to computers and also share data and electric power.

The first generation of USB drives was the USB 1.0. Those models covered a range of capacities between 8 MB and a maximum of 256 MB. The price and the facilities made this new drives so popular, but the problem was the speed of data transfer.

That speed problem was resolved by the following generations USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 (2008), so now data transfer speed is 5 GB. Also, USB 3.0 allows devices to store an amount of data up to 256 GB for pendrives, which means really a lot.

Talking about USB 4.0 (also called USB-C), it offers new possibilities apart from storing or power sharing. These new devices are smaller and also reversible, so it doesn’t matter how ports are connected, they will run anyway without any problem (and this is a simple but a very useful feauture for users). Furthermore, their capacity to transfer energy watts has been increased.

USB pen drives and USB flash memories have become very popular because people can carry them and also their running is so simple and efficient. Moreover, USB has become one of the best ways to give power to some electronic elements by connecting them to other devices. What is so interesting now is to develop new uses and possibilities for the future. So, what do you think is the next step for USB after 20 years existing?

Human being is always looking for improving their daily life. Optimizing working processes and making daily activities easier are some of the main goals for tech development. So, what have been the best hits that have helped people to simplify life since last century? Here is a selection of some technological advances that made a real difference and that now are used ay time:

  • Code Bar: This code made of bars with different thickness, spaces and numbers is the best way to identify an unique product. It was patented in 1952 in the United States to identify railcars. Nowadays is massively used all around the world for commercial purposes.
  • Ballpoint pen: Though pens were used to write on paper long time ago, it was in 1943 when ballpoint pens were invented to resolve ink problems when writing with traditional pens. Ladislao Biro, its inventor, also patented roll-on deodorants.
  • Credit cards: Invented in 1950, these cards allowed customers to receive credit to pay for services and goods without carrying cash. Also, credit cards are universal in the way that can be used in the most of the commerces. They’re kind of a standard, so it’s so easy to pay anywhere. Also, they’re one of the most common payment method when shopping online. Just introduce their account number, personal data and the purchase is done.
  • CD: Compact Discs allow users to save their data on a digital support which has a disk shape. One standard CD can store up to 700 MB of data. This method was devised in 1980 aiming to save digital audio, but it was fastly adapted to any other kind of files, documents and goals.
  • USB drives: USB standard allows to connect almost any kind of devices, so this is perfect for saving and sharing data. The big advantage of USB flash drives and pendrives (since year 2000) is that their capacity is much larger than a CD. An USB drive can store many gigabytes in a very tiny space, it can be customized, and it also can be connected to any other device with n USB port.
  • Digital cameras: The possibility to save images picked with a camera without waiting to reveal a photo film, as we know it, was real in 1988. Digital cameras also allow to share photos with other digital and electronic devices such as computers, TVs, smartphones, tablets… Now we don’t need physic albums, just a digital screen. Furthermore, we can retouch and improve our own photos easily with photography apps.
  • Personal computers: When PC was invented on the 70s decade, a new era started. The computers became popular and they could be used by almost anybody for work, for their quotidian lives and also for gaming. Nowadays everybody has or shares a personal computer, cause it is indispensable to many of our daily tasks.
  • E-Mail and instant messaging: A revolutionary way to communicate with others was the online messages via mail since 1971. Nowadays, since the 10s decade, instant messaging programs such as Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, Line, Kik and many more have become even more popular than e-mail when talking about instant communication.

GPS navigators: These devices are based on global position technologies and help to locate GPS connected objects anywhere on Earth. Since it was first used in 1964, it has become one of the most efficient methods to find a location, very useful when driving or when looking for a place we’ve never been before and don’t know how to get.
